Closeburn Lodge
Closeburn Lodge
Closeburn Station, Lake Wakatipu
Closeburn Lodge is situated ten kilometres west of Queenstown Village, high above Lake Wakatipu and the highway to Glenorchy.
The client brief was for a six-bedroom lodge for family and visitors, incorporating a collection of separate stone barns. There is also a contemporary element with one steel and glass pavilion, fondly known as the “black butterfly”, which features an outward tilting roof design.
“The geometry of this home stirs the imagination with a dramatic use of steeply pitched roofs, sculptured shapes, and interconnecting pavilions.
It’s clear that this incredible home has been designed and built to successfully offer comfortable living. The well-proportioned spaces and fantastic detailing work enhance the interior of this home.”
– Southern Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards Jury citation
“A successful strategy breaks down a substantial home into a village of four stone barns with a surprise twist. The home’s various forms, which have just the right degree of separation, are situated to address the site and its stunning mountain views. The outdoor areas between them provide a variety of spaces that seek protection from the elements in this exposed landscape.”
