The Architect Directors of Mason & Wales Architects are Ashley Muir, Francis Whitaker and Hamish Muir.

Mason & Wales Architects has a core team of key personnel who have been with the practice for a number of years and provide invaluable experience and expertise.

We have been fortunate to retain senior staff members for many years, who continue to encourage and share their knowledge and experience with younger staff members.

Mason & Wales Architects currently employs eighteen people in our Dunedin office of wide ranging age, experience and culture, offering a diversity and depth of experience in all facets of Architectural Practice.

Mason & Wales Architects has a policy of employing a high ratio of Architects to Technical Staff. The team currently includes; Registered Architects, Architectural Graduates, Architectural Draftsmen, Technicians and Students as well as Administration and Support Staff.

We have established arrangements to employ additional architectural staff on contract as necessary to fast-track the preparation of Drawings when required to produce construction documentation to meet compressed project programmes.

C. Ashley Muir

Registered Architect
B. Arch, FNZIA

C. Ashley Muir graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland in 1969, and joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1970.

Ashley has been a Councillor of the NZ Institute of Architects for three terms and, twice, Chairman of the Southern Branch of the NZ Institute of Architects, and is an elected Fellow of the NZ Institute of Architects.

Ashley has been responsible for the design of a large number of buildings of all types throughout New Zealand. 

His work has been recognised by a considerable number of New Zealand Institute of Architects, Design Awards including two New Zealand Institute of Architects, National Design Awards for the Administration Building at the Port Chalmers Container Terminal and the Otago Harbour Board, Head Office Building at Dunedin.

Ashley is involved in the management of the firm, and in all facets of architectural practice from briefing and design, through the preparation of construction documentation and contract administration.

Francis Whitaker

Registered Architect
B. Arch, FNZIA

Francis Whitaker graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland in 1977 and, after gaining overseas experience, joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1983.

Francis displays exceptional originality and creativeness in the design of a wide range of building types introducing human scale, visual interest and colour into the buildings for the enjoyment of building users and community.

He communicates his ability to conceptualise and ‘see’ buildings through excellent illustrations of the designs which are of great benefit to Clients in their understanding and development of the designs.

He has received numerous New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards and Master Builder Awards, including three Supreme Awards.

Francis is involved in all facets of architectural practice as well as the master planning and urban design, and planning and design of buildings for resorts, small towns, subdivisions and commercial environments.

Recent projects include work at Millbrook, Clearwater, Remarkables Park, Kingston, Ravenswood and Pegasus.

Hamish M. Muir

B. Arch Hons, ANZIA

Hamish M. Muir is a third generation Dunedin Architect. He studied Architecture at the University of Otago and Victoria University and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Architecture Honours degree.

He worked in an architectural practice in Wellington, on award winning residential projects, before travelling overseas and then returning home to Dunedin in 2005 to join Mason & Wales Architects.

Hamish became a Registered Architect in 2006 and is a Committee Member of the Southern Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

He is interested in the Environmentally Sustainable Design of buildings, and has completed Green Star Accredited Professional Training.

Hamish is involved in all facets of the design and construction of both commercial and residential buildings of all types, including new construction and additions and alterations.

Simon Adnitt

B. Arch Hons

Simon joined Mason & Wales Architects in 2017.

Simon was with Walker Group Architects for the previous 19 years becoming an Associate Director in 2004 and running their Queenstown office for the last 10 years.

Simon has a detailed knowledge of the local Queenstown environment in respect to the process of planning, design, construction and consultation.

In addition to the documentation of projects Simon is proficient in carrying out Preliminary Concept Design work and Resource Consents in Queenstown for Community Housing, Hotels and Apartments.

Steve Gilbertson

Registered Architect
B. Arch, ANZIA

Steve joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1984.

He is particularly skilled in the documentation and administration of the construction of large and complex building projects, and has been intimately involved with the buildings for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in Auckland.

Steve is based in Central Otago where he has been involved as the Project Architect for the Award Winning Wanaka Fire Station, and the Camp Glenorchy Net Zero Energy project, as well as a number of residential projects.
